In Latin, lapis translates to stone. Lazuli is derived from the Persian word "lajevard" meaning sky or heaven. During the Middle Ages, it was exported to Europe from the Middle East where it was turned into a pigment known as ultramarine. This specific shade of blue would go on to be used by many artists, especially
